Orions:
Physiology Omnivorous humanoid physically similar to humans, aging, strength, dexterity and biologically compatible with most alpha and beta quadrant races. Most significant differences from humans are copper based green blood similar to Vulcan/Romulans and chlorophyl in the epidermis. The chlorophyl seems to provide additional energy to the biosystem in a manner similar to plants but not exactly the same. Rich green skin, dark hair and eye color.
Psychology Generally sneaky and self interested, very mercenary however they can also be incredible loyal. Although the syndicate has members of most know races the policy of committing suicide before betraying it was originally Orion.
Sociology Limited Democratic Capitalism Sub note: the Orion Syndicate operates more feudalisticly.
Not all Orions are citizens with a right to vote, and even into the 2260's slavery was still legal on Orion, despite being illegal throughout the rest of the Federation. Orion wasn't removed from the Federation for this simply because they had been one of the founding members and always provided the Federation government more than their share of funding.
History Joined the United Federation of Planets in the late 2100's. The Orions already had several colonies and it appeared that they had been involved in conflict before. Most of their ships were designed with low signature hulls and drives making them hard to detect at long range. Orion also signed the arms treaty with other members of the Federation giving up there own personal defensive fleets to support Starfleet. Rather than be handed over to Starfleet or scrapped the entire Orion fleet disappeared, the Orion government claiming they had no idea what had happened.
Latter ships matching the description of the old Orion Defense Fleet where reported committing acts of piracy throughout the Federation. the Orion government has always denied any connection to the rouge elements and has taken an active part in funding Starfleet and assisting in ships construction for Starfleet to help hunt down these predators of free trade. No connections between the Pirates of Orion, or the Orion syndicate as it would later came to be known as, and the Orion government have ever been officially proven.
By the 2260's the Pirates of Orion were involved in piracy, smuggling and would also hire out mercenaries and spies to those willing to pay their prices. Their ships would self-destruct and any agents that knew anything important about the organization of the pirates would commit suicide before allowing them selves to be captured. They were operating throughout Alpha and Beta quadrant and had started recruiting from all races, including disgraced or dissatisfied military and Starfleet personnel.
By the 2370's the Pirates of Orion was almost unheard of and slavery no longer an issue but the Orion Syndicate was becoming a well know but elusive prey to all police forces throughout Alpha and Beta quadrants, something they all knew about but could never nail down. Piracy was much less common in the Federation it is unknown if it continues in other area's of space. However smuggling and mercenary activity continues, as well as assassins and spies for hire, the Syndicate is involved in all types of criminal activity. Ships operated by independent mercenaries have shown many characteristics of old Orion design , including being almost impossible to detect with long range scans even without using cloaking devices. Membership is never restricted by race, fewer than 10% are actually Orions, but those that join must pay a substantial membership fee, as well as a fare based on their income to their superiors. Members are known to commit suicide before being compelled to testify against the Syndicate. If a member does betray the syndicate they are hunted down and killed and if that takes to long or proves too difficult the betrayers family is killed.
