USS Scoperta

* * * * * Parallel Universe * * * * * (( USS SCOPERTA - Bridge )) The minutes passed slowly, like hours. The crew waited to hear the results on the Captain. Would she make it? The scuttlebutt was that she has a 50/50 chance. Not good, but it could be much worse. =/\= Malari to OBrien =/\= =/\= OBrien, go ahead. =/\= =/\= The Captain died, at seven thirty hundred hours. Ive logged it in the system, you are now the commanding officer. Malari out. =/\= Signar felt a knot in the pit of his stomach. He had barely gotten to know the captain. If only he had not blown off hiking with her to date that Bajorian.... He felt guilt. A tone on his control panel caught his attention. "Sir," Signar reported, "There is something in the wormhole." At least this would give the bridge crew something to focus on. "Something? Mr. Signar?" OBrien asked. "Can you be more specific?" "It is a torpedo housing." Signar said, "Scans show it to be virtually empty." "Beam it aboard." OBrien said easily enough, "Lets have a look. ETA on the end of the wormhole?" "Ten minutes." Signar explained. That was a long distance in a worm hole, to travel at warp, but a warp field never worked well in a worm-hole, or at least in theory they didnt. As far as Signar knew, and could recall or look up, no one had ever tried it before. * * * Cargo Bay Two * * * OBrien had no spring in his step. The loss of his Captain weight heavily on his mind. Two ops technicians and NVek were opening the housing they beamed aboard. NVek: "Sir initial scans are inconclusive." OBrien: "What?" NVek : "Sir this torpedo defies description. It is made of a metal the computer has no record of, its design is clearly Starfleet, but of a technology we are years from developing." OBrien: "Is it dangerous?" NVek: "No, it is empty, save for..." He opens a small compartment. A PADD is inside. "This." Both men look at each other. Pressing the On tab the PADD comes to life. An image of NVek is sitting behind a desk. He is dressing in command colors and captains pips line his collar. PADD: "This is Captain NVek from the Star Fleet Marine Corps, of the Starship USS SCOPERTA." Again, both men look at each other. OBrien would expect this to be a joke, but all indications show it is not, nor was now the time for it. The PADD continued. PADD: "If this message is received by the, well, by the SCOPERTA, please note. You should be only minutes from the exit of the worm hole." NVek: "Six, actually." OBrien nodded. PADD: "My science officer, Mr. OBrien has theorized that we are trapped in a spatial phenomena, caused by going to warp in the worm-hole. Doing so has split the barriers of parallel dimensions, space and time. You may have noticed the effect, from recalling things you never did, to a strong sense of Deja Vu." PADD: "THE CYCLE MUST END! Apparently, the ship leaves the wormhole, but not the phenomena, which is attached like a rubber band. After reaching a certain distance, the band snaps the ship back into the wormhole, and the process is repeated again and again. OBrien believes the only way to end this is with a full on anti-matter explosion." PADD: "I didnt believe him, but arranged for this message to remain behind. If this sounds likely, you know what you have to do. If this sounds crazy, or you can hail us, please ignore this message." OBrien takes the PADD and runs to the turbolift. He must make a tough decision by the time he reaches the bridge. The doors open and he strides out. "ETA?", he asks once more. "Twenty seconds.", comes the reply. "Drop the warp core.", he explains. "Sir?" Signar asks. "Do it! That is an order!", he yells. Signar taps several buttons. On the cusp of leaving, the core is ejected, and the ship flies out of the wormhole. Signar: "Now on impulse power. Non-essential systems shutting down to preserve power." OBrien: "Continue to DS10." * * * * * Our Universe * * * * * =/\= Malari to OBrien =/\= =/\= OBrien, go ahead. =/\= =/\= The Captain is recovering nicely. She will return to duty in a few shifts. Malari out. =/\= Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Signar joked, "Well sir, no promotion for you today." OBrien: "Thats not how I want to make Captain. But the day is young Ensign." Signar smiled, feeling good. A tone on his control panel caught his attention. "Sir," Signar reported, "There is something in the wormhole." At least this would give the bridge crew something to focus on. "Something? Mr. Signar?" OBrien asked. "Can you be more specific?" "It is a torpedo housing." Signar said, "Scans show it to be virtually empty, and Im picking up a warp core. That appears to be intact." "Beam the torpedo aboard." OBrien said easily enough, "Lets have a look. ETA on the end of the wormhole?" "Ten minutes." * * * Cargo Bay Two * * * OBrien had a spring in his step. The mystery, two actually, on his mind. It is made of a metal the computer has no record of, its design is clearly Starfleet, but of a technology we are light-years from developing." OBrien: "Is it dangerous?" NVek: "No, it is empty, save for..." He opens a small compartment. A PADD is inside. "This." Both men look at each other. Pressing the On tab the PADD comes to life. An image of NVek is sitting behind a desk. He is dressing in command colors and captains pips line his collar. "Destroy the warp core.", he explains. "Sir?" Signar asks. "Do it! That is an order!", he yells. Signar taps several buttons. On the cusp of leaving, the core is ignited, and the ship flies out of the wormhole. Instead of an explosion, the reverse happens. Energy seems to implode into the wormhole, but the wormhole is undamaged. For a single second, the area of space is filled with countless USS SCOPERTA images. Some were battleships, some were mere scouts. Some had battle scars, while others looked alien. The bridge crew smiled as a sense of unity, of family was shared. Then in a twinkling, the images faded, and everything was again as it should be. OBrien: "Continue to DS10." Signar: "Aye sir!"
